The Medicines Management Team Wins the Healthcare Innovation & Excellence Award

GP surgeries across the UK handle more appointments, prescriptions and medication queries than ever before. Much of the work that keeps patients safe happens quietly in the background, carried out by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Now that work has been recognised in public.

The Medicines Management Team has won the Healthcare Innovation & Excellence Award. The team received the recognition at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Manchester. It was recognised by Dr Afzal Khan CBE MP and the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Shaukat Ali.

A Proud Moment at the British Muslim Heritage Centre

Both leaders praised the team for its service to the NHS. They highlighted its standard of work in medicines management and patient care.

For our team, the award means more than a trophy on a shelf. It recognises the hours our pharmacists and technicians put in every week. They review medicines, answer queries and support GP practices that are stretched to their limits.

What Dr Afzal Khan MP and Councillor Shaukat Ali Said

After the ceremony, both guests spoke to the press about the team and the wider community behind it.

Recognising Dedication Across the NHS

Councillor Shaukat Ali congratulated the team on its win. On behalf of Manchester City Council and the people of Manchester, he thanked the team for its contribution to the National Health Service. He wished the team every success for the future.

Both speakers praised the extra effort, dedication and passion that healthcare professionals bring to their work every day. They noted that the NHS relies on people who go above and beyond for their patients, often without recognition. The Medicines Management Team, they said, is a strong example of that commitment in action.

A UK-Wide Network That Inspires Others

Dr Afzal Khan said the team’s work on medicines is highly valued, especially as the need for this support keeps growing. He pointed to the network the team has built across the UK and said it encourages everyone working in healthcare.

He described the team as an inspiration and a role model for others in the field. He also encouraged the team to carry on with the same energy and make themselves and their country proud.

Why This Award Matters for General Practice

GPs Are Under Real Pressure

General practice is under strain. Appointment demand is rising, prescribing targets keep growing and clinical time is limited. Every hour a GP spends on repeat prescriptions or medication queries is an hour taken away from patients who need a doctor.

Pharmacists Are Part of the Solution

This is where a GP pharmacist makes a clear difference. A clinical pharmacist can carry out structured medication reviews, manage long-term conditions and monitor high-risk drugs. GPs then have more time for complex cases. Patients get safer prescribing and quicker access to care.

This award shows that the model works. It also shows that patient care stays at the centre of everything we do.
